Computing

Through a high-quality computing education, we aim to equip pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of Computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Children enjoy learning to design, write and debug programs using algorithms.  They have the opportunity to look inside a computer and understand how they work in greater detail.  They recognise ways that computing skills can be used in the wider world and in the workplace.  Our children are preparing for a world where they will be using technologies that haven’t yet being invented and they use a variety of current software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices.  Because of this, ‘Tinkering’ has become an important part of our curriculum – giving learners an opportunity to explore new software and experiment with different features.   It is also important that children develop their word processing skills and they are encouraged to learn touch typing skills to assist with this.

The Internet has become an everyday part of children’s lives and brings with it new opportunities to communicate and handle information from across the globe.  However, increased provision brings with it increased risk.  Online safety has a high profile in school as well as within Computing lessons; the first lesson of each term will always focus on online safety and ensuring children are aware of the positive and negative aspects of the internet.

Our children are enthusiastic computer users and enjoy the opportunity to practise and refine their computing skills as well as developing their resilience.

Miss Dawe is the leader of computing in the school, supported by Miss Milborrow. They enjoy leading computing because in the fast moving world where technology is constantly changing they believe it is important to prepare children for the future. It is also vital that children understand the opportunities technology provides whilst also being taught how to use it safely.
