French

At Hawkinge Primary School we aim to develop children’s skills and knowledge in practical communication in French, enabling them to make progress in speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as in their understanding of grammar.   We wish to encourage children’s curiosity about the world around them, thinking about their own culture and that of others.

Lessons provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and lay the foundations for further foreign language learning at key stage 3 and hopefully beyond.  Children will be able to make links between French and their own mother tongue, understanding similarities and differences and using that to further their language learning skills.

Pupils learn to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary.  Children develop their resilience, and are encouraged to ‘have a go’, take risks with their learning and learn in a fun and engaging way.

Miss Dawe is the French leader in school. She is passionate about language learning, the doors it can open and opportunities it can offer. She says that supporting children to develop an appreciation of different languages and cultures creates global citizens of the future.
