Design & Technology

At Hawkinge Primary School we aim to develop children’s skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food. We wish to encourage children’s creativity, imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems, thinking about important issues such as the environment and sustainability.

Children learn lifelong skills in an engaging and relevant way.  Our cookery pledge offers children the opportunity to learn to cook a range of foods in a bespoke cookery suite; they also learn the entire process of preparing a meal through planting their own vegetables to use in their cooking as well as the clearing up afterwards!

Our thematic approach enables children to make links with DT and other subjects and children enjoy applying their DT skills in their homework projects as well.  They learn the key stages of product development including research, planning and designing, making and reviewing the success of their product.

In Design and Technology, pupils can apply skills learnt in Maths, Science, Art, Computing, English and other subjects.  Through innovation, resourcefulness and resilience, children are encouraged to ‘have a go’ and learn from their experiences.

If you wish to see the progression of skills document for DT, please contact the school.  To find out more about what your child will be learning in DT this year, please see the curriculum overviews on the relevant class pages.

Miss Dawe is the D&T leader in school. She enjoys the process of D&T from the research, through to planning, making and evaluating  a product. Experience shows that children enjoy the practical aspects of this subject and it is a great way to develop skills of resilience and perseverance along with teamwork!
