Maths

Our aim at Hawkinge Primary is for all children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. We want children to apply this to reasoning, problem-solving and real-life situations, justifying or challenging statements using relevant mathematical language.  We want children to develop a growing confidence, positivity and enjoyment of maths, challenging themselves and becoming more resilient learners.

Mr O’Brien is the Maths leader in school. He enjoys encouraging children to develop their maths skills and consider different approaches to problem solving. Maths is all around us whether we realise it or not and plays a vital role in our everyday lives.

At Hawkinge Primary School …

– Maths is taught on a daily basis at Hawkinge Primary School. From year 3 onwards children are grouped in sets.

– Our long term planning follows the objectives from the National Curriculum. A wide range of resources are used to support teachers with planning and assessment.

– The calculation policy is used within the school to ensure a consistent approach to teaching the four operations over time.

– A the beginning of year 2, children will be given a ‘Times Tables Passport’. This is designed to encourage and reward children who practise and learn their tables, so that by the end of year 4 they know all multiplication and division facts up to 12 X 12. Children have to complete a Multiplication tables check in year 4 (June).

– Prior to a new unit of work children complete a ‘cold’ task with questions testing the objectives from that unit with no teacher input. Teachers then mark the task and adapt planning accordingly. The unit of work is then taught and at the end of the unit children compete a ‘hot’ task to assess the learning from the unit.

– Work is marked in line with the school marking policy, with teachers giving verbal and written feedback. Children have opportunities to respond to marking, using green pens to correct/improve their work.

– Teachers identify children daily who have not met the objective in a lesson and these children are given same-day targeted intervention by a teaching assistant.

– In EYFS children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals. Children in Year 1-Year 6 are assessed against the ‘Expected Standard’ of the National Curriculum. Children’s progress is tracked each term and is recorded as either emerging, expected or exceeded.
